Sociology is a fundamental discipline of the social sciences. Thus, it is no surprise that the establishment of the Department of Sociology at our University has been a longstanding request of the academic community. Its establishment in 2019, as part of National and Kapodistrian University’s new strategic development, a key part of which has been the expansion of the School of Economic and Political Sciences, was enthusiastically received by the academic and research communities both within and outside of the NKUA.
The Department’s main purpose and intention is to produce graduates with strong academic knowledge and professional skills that will enable them to find their way in the corporate world and the public administration.
Sociology, as an academic discipline, is best cultivated through a creative synthesis of theoretical knowledge and empirical research. It aims at an analytical understanding of societal issues and challenges as they appear in their diachronic and contemporary forms. A combination of solid theoretical traditions with qualitative and quantitative tools is applied to explicate the processes that determine the historical evolution and contemporary dynamics of societies. In this context, the ambition of NKUA’s Department of Sociology is to develop a critical approach that will shed sociological light on phenomena taking place in the economic, the political and the cultural realms. In addition, the Department seeks to build interdisciplinary alliances with other social sciences, such as social anthropology, economics, political science, as well as social and economic history. It thus aims at providing its students with broad knowledge resources and problem-solving skills that will help them achieve their professional goals, be they educational, research or administrative. Since its establishment, the Department of Sociology has become a unique asset for the School of Economic and Political Sciences, as its academic logic and practice places it at the center of the academic endeavors of all the departments of the School and beyond.
By tapping into the general and specialized knowledge acquired during their studies (by means of mandatory and mandatory-elective courses, respectively), the graduates of the Department of Sociology can have a vast spectrum of professional opportunities and prospects.
